After months of hard work & waiting my new website is finally finished. Click HERE to check it out. You will notice a few things are different:

First, my name has changed. While Marissa Nicole Photography was good to me & it’s who I am; Marissa Dodgen || Photographer & Blogger seemed like a more natural progression. I always found it odd introducing myself when I would return a phone call….”Hi, this is Marissa from Marissa Nicole Photography”, something just felt off & confusing. I also felt I was doing myself & my company a disservice by not using my last name because my husband’s family is so large. I thought I was missing out on given opportunities. That way people could just google my last name if they knew my husband, but couldn’t remember mine.

Second, there’s a new look. I have learned as you develop a brand things change. When I started I wanted something very simple & more on the sophisticated side. I chose a theme of black, white, gray, & red to appeal to couples, events, & weddings; but as my business has grown, I have started to shoot more infants & families & I felt my brand needed a softer, brighter, more friendly look. I noticed an obsession with yellow & stripes, so I felt it was a safe direction for me to go.

Lastly, my portfolio is included in this site. I am still on a WordPress platform, but with this blogsite I was very limited in what I could do. Now with the new site, I can include my portfolio & tags to allow for easier navigation. If you just want to see weddings or engagements, go to the categories tab & select weddings or engagements. Want to see families, click on families. It is much more user-friendly.

I love this site & I will keep it up for a while, but just like a house you’ve out grown, it is time to move on. So please come visit me at my new home. I look forward to welcoming you!

First of all, I can honestly say I have never edited a session constantly saying “how gorgeous is this girl?”. I mean really, the images that came out of Senior Rep Katrina’s rep session are insane. So gorgeous & unbelievable. I can’t wait to do her actual senior session later this summer.

Any parent can tell you babies grow so fast. One minute your holding them in your arms for the first time & the next you’re wondering what kind of adult, husband, or wife they will be. That has become one of my favorite things about capturing young families & the itty bitties. I enjoy documenting those little moments & really capturing who they are at the time, when they won’t be that age much longer.

Baby Chloe, like all other babies, isn’t a baby anymore…she’s a toddler. From the moment she got out of the car, Chloe hammed it up & smiled & grinned & showed us she was ready for her cake smash & she sure didn’t disappoint.

Pendleton King Park- 1Year Old || Augusta, GA Family Photographer

You never know what you’re going to get with 1 year olds. Sometimes they’re hams & love getting their pictures done, other times if you get a picture of their face at all you’ve done well.

Serafina was definitely a ham. She smiled & smirked & showed off those cherub cheeks & brand new teeth for a whole 45 minutes & then she was all done. That was perfectly fine with me because I got so many great pictures out of her I’m stunned.

What a cutie!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the little finger in the air, almost like she’s saying “excuse me, I have a point to make!” For sure one of my favs.

Beautiful warm light & the last picture she was willing to take. What a gem!

Newborn Lifestyle || Augusta, GA Family Photographer

One of my favorite things about photography is the opportunity to capture people as they are. This certainly extends to families of newborns. When a newborn enters the family, parents are enamored, scared, or just plain awestruck with the newest addition. Other siblilngs…not so much!

It is one of the fun dynamics to capture with families & Jamie & Daniel’s family was a perfect example of that dynamic. Ryane Faith was born a little over a week ago & older brother Jordan was only interested in showing me all he had to offer. Running, jumping, cars, cartoons, you name it Jordan was all about it. As long as it wasn’t named Ryane.

Inspired & Rebranded- Branding For You! || Augusta, GA Photographer

Last week I announced on the FB page, that I was working on a complete rebrand of MNP. From the website to the logo to the purpose to the name, everything will be changing come this spring.

When I first started I branded as I went, just did things as they came along. But now that I have been doing this for 4 years, I have a much better understanding of who I am as a photographer & a person. My previous brand has served me well, but as I decided to shift my focus, I also decided the brand needed a new look. I felt with the addition of photography classes & a greater focus on that, the brand needed to be warmer, friendlier, & not quite so serious.

As I thought about what to post today, I figured it would be nice to take you through the process of my rebrand. So I made an inspiration board of the things that immediately appealed to me as I started this process.

Most of these pictures came from various boards on my Pinterest account. I wanted my brand to represent who I am at this moment, so I figured my Pinterest was a good place to start. Jasmine Star recommends going on photo safari & take photos of stuff that instantly appeals to you; Promise Tangeman recommends looking through your closet. Whatever you do, you will notice patterns. I saw the same patterns, colors, & textures over & over on my boards. I’m sure you can pick up the patterns too. Yellow, blue, taupe, burlap, wavy lines, stripes, mustard yellow. I was amazed how much my style came through.

So this is the first step. The next step is my logo. In the middle left picture you will notice scribbling.; this is a writing I did to try to focus on what I wanted my new logo to represent. I snapped a picture & sent it to the designer I’m working with. After that is the website, which will look similar to the picture in the middle of my board.

You see, a brand should not only represent you, but what you are visually drawn to. It may not come out the way you imagined, but it will be 100% real, 100% you, & 100% original & that is everything a brand should be.

Photography Classes || Augusta, Ga Photographer

Wednesday is not a normal day for me to post, but I have exciting news that I wanted to share. Anyone who knows me can tell I enjoy teaching/coaching people. I was a gymnastics coach through college & have also coached cheerleading. I can easily talk hours upon hours about photography or business & have before because I am always so excited when I have someone to discuss it with.

I have learned photography from some many amazing people willing to share their knowledge with me & I decided that it is time for me to do the same. I am in the works of writing multiple curriculums for photography classes. As of right now there are 3 classes, but I hope to add more as I become more seasoned in teaching & instructing.

Beginner- This class is aimed toward those who want to become more familiar with the capabilities & functions of a dslr camera & improve their own personal photography. Great for parents who want to take pictures of their kids or for people who just like to take pretty pictures.

Intermediate- Builds upon principles learned in Beginner, but aims to teach students to shoot in full manual mode & gets into more specifics to taking photos, posing subjects, addressing landscape, & using natural light. Great for people who want to dive deeper into photography or would potentially like to do photography professionally.

Building a Business- While the focus will predominately be for photographers, designers, etc, this will be a good class for anyone who has started or would like to start their own business. Many of the principles I have learned through experience owning my own company, working for a large corporation, & business school.

As of now, I will accept 5 students for Beginner & Intermediate & the class will be $120 for all 8 sessions. Building a Business has 10 spots available & is $80 for all 8 sessions. In the near future I hope to add more specific short-term classes like How to take better photos of your kids, How to take pictures of babies, Editing 101, Blogging, & Landscape. Classes will most likely take place on Saturdays with a few Sundays & as the summer rolls around & days become longer a few weeknights as well.

Any Given Day || Augusta, GA Photographer

On any given day my desk is a mess. I have discovered (ok, not true, I’ve known it for a long time) that I am writer. In many senses, but in this particular one I like to write everything down. With the commonness of tablets & phones that can take notes, I still write everything down. Almost like I understand it better if I have physically written it down in my handwriting.

I have notebooks with random scribblings & notebooks with intended purposes. There are constantly random leafs of paper floating around with notes, thoughts, do-not-forgets, & who knows what else.

This even translates into my tactile feeling for books. I dont’ do e-readers for the same reason I actually write things down. I don’t retain what I remember looking at something on a tablet or computer. I need to touch the page it is written on. Even though an e-version is much cheaper & sometimes free, I would rather to pay to have the ability to touch & be able to circle & write on my magazine or book.

This was what I was looking at that made me think of this random thought!

I posted something on my fb photography page the other day about how I love photography with or without the business side of it. I love being able to chronicle my own life in beautiful pictures. If I gave it all up today, as long as I could fill my own albums with pretty & meaningful pictures & be able to share them, I would be happy!

I thought that same thing this morning as I took this picture…

I love the curls in my son’s hair. Sometimes, like this morning they are cute little curls that look purposeful. Other days it’s a wild, crazy, bed-headed toddler mess. Either way its one of my favorite things.

I encourage everyone reading this to look at photography a little differently. Many people, myself included, use family sessions or engagement sessions as a time to get that perfect representation of our families (many times one used for a christmas card). But is it really a good representation of your family? I encourage you to let a photographer into your home one day, not the perfect home you envision from Southern Living, but your home. The home with blocks all over the place & shoes stacked in the corner. Let us follow you around & document life as you know it, the ins & outs of everyday life. I guarantee you won’t be unhappy with the outcome & you will cherish those pictures more than any other you have.

Boudoir is a beautiful gift || Augusta, GA Wedding Photographer

Boudoir photography is a beautiful gift for a bride or wife to give to their husband. God designed the women’s body to be attractive & beautiful & any husband would agree. I love when a women throws her inhibitions out the window in order to give her husband a beautiful & timeless gift.

So why don’t I label myself as a boudoir photographer? I firmly believe that a women’s body is a gift from God to her husband & her husband alone; for this reason, I am incredibly specific about my boudoir clients. I will only do a session for a wife to her husband & for my brides I will not provide the album or disk until the wedding day.

I don’t post boudoir sessions on my blog for the same reason, unless it reveals absolutely nothing. So here is a teeny, tiny peek at how I approach my boudoir sessions.

When I do boudoir sessions, I like to allow the husband’s imagination to work. I don’t do fully exposed photos & I absolutely love black & white. In my regular photography I really like bold colors & lots of contrast but for this type of photography I approach it in a more simple, pretty way.

North Augusta Bridal Portraits || Augusta, GA Engagement, Bridal, & Wedding Photographer

I love when a bride will use her bridal session to do something a little out of the ordinary. Not weird or odd, just a little south of traditional. Brittany was married last May & was totally game for some portraits that weren’t as traditional.

When I approach a bridal session, I start with the more traditional poses. The ones that will be displayed on Grandma’s mantel & maybe even make it into the foyer at the wedding.

After the more traditional poses, the portraits take on a little bit more of a fashion inspired & contemporary feel. For this session, we did a fabulous styled shoot that was accented by the gorgeous inventory of Ever Thine Vintage Rentals & Wedding Planning.

This particular set-up was inspired by a cold night at home, because all us girls sit around in our Uggs, drinking hot chocolate, lounging in our wedding dresses, looking as gorgeous as Brittany does.

Kevin & Holly’s Savannah Rapids Engagement || Augusta, GA Engagement & Wedding Photographer

I didn’t know until yesterday that there are mechanics to skipping rocks. I mean really….who knew? As I was observing Kevin trying to teach Holly how to skip a rock, I learned about technique & mechanics & wrist flicking. Again, who knew?

This was apparently his 5th attempt at teaching her to skip rocks. One of the last four came at 9:30…AM…. New Year’s Day (yeah, Holly was happy about that time call), after a 2.5 mile walk down the canal, & 3 attempts to teach her, Kevin said “don’t skip this rock!”. It was the rock. Surprise!

What’s a Photographer || Augusta, GA Senior, Engagement, & Wedding Photographer

Some photographers are professionals, some are hobbiests. Some consider themselves more of an artist, while others consider themselves more of a technical photographer. Some get wrapped around the axle about the “rules”, while others [like myself] are only slightly guided by rules but in the end throw the rule book out the window.

Whatever your reason for becoming a photographer or choosing to just like photography, it is a personal choice. Every professional who is in this for the art & is passionate about what they do will tell you there’s much more behind taking pictures than simply taking pictures. There’s emotional & sentimental value that can only be captured in a still. There’s love & light that they will work on for hours, days, or years to get right. Whatever the style, the technique, reason, or desire it’s a personal one.

I am a photographer first because I love the art of it & the raw emotional whether positive or not. Second, because I am passionate about investing in someone’s life. Whether it is a Senior girl who doesn’t 100% believe she is awesome & amazing or a couple who have found that one special someone to spend forever with & they want to share their love with the world.

I have found no way to be more personally & passionately involved in someone elses life than to capture their life. Frozen in time. For all to see. Not to be fixed. Or erased. Or changed! My heart leaps when a photo in my head becomes a real life photo in my hands. I have amazing, vivid, & wonderful memories of my son because I have been able to stop time for a just a brief moment.

I love being a photographer. Whether a professional photographer or hobbiest, I am passionate about this craft & in love with this art & simply couldn’t imagine my life without it anymore. It has effected the way I visually & mentally see things. Every car ride, airplane ride, or new destination is looked at through a slightly different eye & that’s what a true photographer is, a slightly different more detailed eye that analyzes light, perspective, & situations in a way someone else doesn’t. So the next time you see a photographer working or playing, take a second to stop & observe them because I guarantee they are observing things much differently than anyone else.

What’s the point of so many lens? || Augusta, GA Senior, Engagement, & Wedding Photographer & Blogger

Macro, Zoom, Prime, 300mm, 16mm, fisheye. What does it all do? Let’s not even get into the conversions & what all the numbers mean. Very simply, what do they do. I will cover the more specific points of lens in a later post, but for now I want to show you what specific lens do…specifically my lens.

So here’s how this post works. I have 5 different lens (small potatoes compared to many, but I’m not into tons of gear) & each is featured. I wanted to give you a view of what each lens does & how it affects your view. I sat in the same place about 2 feet away from the swing & took the same picture/focus with every lens. I used a small object- my wedding rings- & a larger object-our porch swing- so you could really see the difference in the zooms.

This is a 18-55mm, often referred to as a Kit Lens. This is the lens that is included when you buy standard camera package. I don’t use this lens a lot because it’s not a great lens, but it is really versatile & allows for more wide open shots than any of my others. I always have it on me at a wedding (for the reasons above) & always take it on trips for the same reasons. The upper picture on the left is zoomed out all the way at 18mm & the lower picture is zoomed in a 55mm.

This is the 30mm Macro. I usually only take this on wedding & engagement shoots. A macro lens is meant to capture small details & allows you to get very close & capture the details. The top left picture is the comparison picture & the lower left picture is showing you the actual purpose of the lens- to get in tight & snug. My focus on the lower picture is a tad off, but if you click on it you will notice you can really see the detailing of ring as well as a piece of fabric that got stuck in it [I didn't ever noticed until I pulled up the pictures in Lightroom].

This is my 35mm. I got this as a Christmas present & it was the widest lens that I could find in my price range that wasn’t a fisheye. This is 1 of 3 lens I always have with me for Lifestyle sessions. Its wide enough to get in scenery but still focused enough the keep the focus of the session as number 1. If you notice, there’s a little less of the scene below the bench than with the 30mm above, but it’s not a ton closer.

This is my girl! The 50mm. This is my favorite lens. My predominate shooter. This lens is so versatile that sometimes I forget to change out during sessions. It does have its own limitations, as does everything, but I shoot with this lens probably 90-95% of the time. The view on this is a good bit closer & for the first time you can actually see the ring.

This is the longest range zoom I have. It, too, is a Kit Lens. I got this with my first camera [I have 2 now]. I do like this lens, but it doesn’t get used very often. When I do use it it is generally on landscape stuff or at the reception. This is the 3rd lens I have with me on Lifestyle sessions, but I don’t always use it. When I do it’s usually at 85mm (the center picture on the left) because 85mm is considered a portrait length. I gave you 3 different views here: 55mm- the widest this lens shoots, 85mm- what I use it at mostly, & 200mm- longest range it has. I did have to lean back a little further to get it to focus at 200mm, but I stayed in planted in the same place.

There are a ton of lens options out there. I prefer to shoot with Prime Lenses which are fixed focal length lens (30mm, 35mm, 50mm are my primes) but there’s a lot of versitility & no wedding photographer should be without at least 1 zoom lens (the 18-55mm & 55-200mm). I don’t tote a ton of gear & I don’t care to have a ton, but I hope to upgrade to an 85mm prime & a 70-300mm for weddings soon.

As a photographer one of the questions I am most asked (well sometimes I think it is more of a statement than a question) is “oh you can just photoshop that out?” or “can you make me 20 lbs skinner?” or “can you just edit the missing person from our family in?”. For me, personally, the answer is usually a laugh followed by a no.

I actually don’t even use “Photoshop”. I use a product from Adobe called Lightroom. Lightroom is specifically designed to fix lighting issues or color issues. I’m sure it has many more capabilities than I use, but I use it for those purposes alone & maybe to edit out a distraction or blemish or two, but that’s it.

For a while I felt like I wasn’t the photographer I should be because I don’t do the fancy, smancy photoshop things (shoot, I don’t even know how); but then a friend- oddly enough the friend in this picture- told me to own it & use it to my advantage & you know what? She’s right!

My goal is to always get the image as perfect as I can straight out of the camera (often abbreviated as sooc- can also mean out of the can). I like to capture what is there, not create something that isn’t.

In light of that, I’ve been asked quite a few times to share my editing process, so here it is beginning to end.

Here’s the original photo:

Step 1: Evaluating the image- my first impression is that it’s a little flat, dark & a little cold & the house in the right hand corner, kind of bugs me.

Step 2: Adjust the temperature to warm it up a bit.

Step 3: Lighten up the Exposure a bit to +.25 (the numbers are exclusive to this photo. Every photo is different, which is why I do all my edits one at a time).

Step 4: Using the brush tool, I brighten McKenna’s face because she is sitting in Andrew’s shadow. The exposure [of the brush] was set to +.14 & the brightness to 7.

Step 5: Next is the blacks, the blacks give the picture a little more depth & combat the flat look I first observed. I adjust them to 41 (that is extremely high, but because they are in a shadow & the sun was incredibly bright behind them it was necessary).

Step 6: Next, I adjust the contrast to +25 to give the photo a little bit of pop.

Step 7: I saw a little pink in their skin tones, so I adjust the tint to -6.

Step 8: Recently when I have started slightly darkening the hair around the face because it looks a little more natural since dark hair absorbs light & light hair reflects it. It also gives Andrew & McKenna’s faces a little more depth.

Step 9: I did one last look & noticed I missed the house in the corner

so I cloned the house out using the cloning tool & copying the section of grass to the left to match the area being removed.

& Voila…..

While it seems a little long the entire process takes me about 1-2 minutes, allowing me to edit an entire session in usually a few hours (that’s dedicated hours, which are few & far between with a toddler in my house).

So here’s the before & after, side by side…

2013/2014 Senior Reps || Augusta, GA Senior Portrait, Engagement, & Wedding Photographer

It’s that time again. Time to start booking Senior Reps for the 2013/2014 school year. This year (well next year more specifically) I am looking for 1 senior guy & girl per Augusta, North Augusta, Thompson, & Aiken area high schools to be the senior rep at their school.

So what is a Senior Rep? SR are ambassadors for Marissa Nicole Photography, your “job” is to try to get as many other seniors as possible to book their senior portraits with me. Every rep will have 2 sessions. The first will take place in late winter/early spring & be a more styled shoot. The second session will be the actual senior session & will be 100% personalized to them.

Why is being a Senior Rep so awesome? SR have the opportunity to get their pictures for free & also get a personalized app for their phone for each of the sessions they do. There is also the opportunity to earn free prints as well as other incentives. The more your recommendations book, the more credits you get.

What is a credit & how do I get it? 1 credit is equal to 1 booking from the SR’s recommendations. 3 credits earn the SR’s Senior session pictures. 6 credits earns a gallery or large-scale print or canvas. 9 credits or more gets a ton of awesome things that are too numerous to list here.

There is no deadline to apply, but I am only taking 1 senior guy & girl from each school, so if the 2 spots get filled that’s it for that school.
